Quickie with an Artist: Imogen-Blue Hinojosa
Make it stand out
American artist, Imogen-Blue Hinojosa, combines performance, installation and photography in her work that explores our own stories in relation to the performed stories we tell on our own stages. Having studied photography in London and Maryland, USA, her flourishing and provocative art has been exhibited in Washington D.C., Baltimore, Dublin and San Francisco. Her work is powerfully affective in representing the trans community in their bodies and souls, where she is passionate advocating for trans rights. We asked her some quick fire questions:
What is the best artwork out there in your opinion?
Honestly, anything that makes you feel something. I think the best work is always the kind that makes you stop and consider it, or leaves you thinking about it days later. I always find myself revisiting Pina Bausch’s work for example, you’ll never leave a performance of her dance company lacking inspiration.

Who, or what, broke your heart?
The state of Trans health care globally. The inaccessibility of basic needs for trans women, the fact that we are still dying and nothing is being done about it except for by the community. Donate to a trans health /rights organization and when you see violence speak up.
What’s your current fantasy/daydream?
I try to bring fantasy into my everyday, I think this really comes across in my work as well. Dressing for me has always been a way to try on new versions of the self.
What memory still makes you cringe you now?
I don’t really have any, I think people should all take themselves less seriously and love laughing at themselves.
“I think the best work is always the kind that makes you stop and consider it, or leaves you thinking about it days later.”
Who would you have direct your biopic film?
Wong Kar Wai, I’m always returning to his films, his use of poetic language paired with Christopher Doyle’s Camera work, truly stunning.
When was the last time you cried?
August 27th, 2021
What is the best bit of gossip you have at the moment?
I’ve just relocated to Berlin so unfortunately, this chismosa is lacking in the chisme department!
What is your favourite condiment?
Valentina’s Hot Sauce
What makes you angry?
Transphobes, TERFs and people who walk slow
Who, or what, do you need to tell them you love them?
Everyone I love knows it, I tell them regularly. Do this often, people need more love in their lives.
