Saturday Yawning with Flowerovlove

Make it stand out

Joyce Cisse AKA Flowerovlove is the definition of a London cool girl. Earlier this year, the South Londoner released her debut EP “Think Flower” and walked in Paris Fashion Week for XULY.Bët, was the face of a Gucci campaign and sold out her first show at Laylow in London. Known for her impeccable sustainable style, big hair and unique tone, Polyester spoke with this wunderkind all about her love of nature, Tame Impala and her new dreamy single “Saturday Yawning.”

Your new single “Saturday Yawning” is out on the 2nd of December, can you tell us a little bit about the song and the inspirations behind it?

Thé inspiration behind the song is when you come home from school or work on a Friday and just knowing tomorrow you can wake up whatever time you want tomorrow. ‘Tell me what you know about the Saturday yawning, but you're rolling around in bed’.

Was this single a lockdown creation? If so, what was it like to make music in the pandemic, did you find it easy or difficult?

“Saturday Yawning” is a lockdown baby. It was actually made in the first lockdown, a very easy and fun process as I’m usually working at home with my brother Wilfred, we always have so much fun.

You’ve previously mentioned in other interviews that you’re inspired by the likes of Tame Impala, what is it about their music that moves you and how does their music influence your sound?

Honestly I love everything about Tame Impala. Kevin Parker is overall just an incredible being. What I love the most is that I’ve never once skipped a song in any of his albums, each song follows a story and should be listened to in order. I love the production more than anything. I never turn the volume up or down. The mixes are incredible! I love anything with a hard bass line and synths.

“You don’t need people, all you need to do is believe in what you’re doing and keep going because everything always works out.”

You mentioned in an interview with Coeval Magazine that your name Flowerovlove means “we are blossoming, growing and developing, like a flower does.” What is it about nature that inspires you so much?

The fact that nature is unstoppable inspires me and that makes me unstoppable as we are nature, we’re always growing no matter what. Our leaves will always fall off and they will always grow again. We continue to bloom like the flower.

Did you know you always wanted to be a musician and make music?

I have always known I wanted to be a musician since I slid out of the womb hahaha. It’s the only thing that feels right and that feels like home.

A lot of young musicians complain about feeling underestimated because of their age. Is that something you struggle with at all?

Not at all. I am taken very seriously as I am very wise for my age and I know what I want . I don’t think it’s an age thing. I think it’s a confidence thing, when people don't believe in you it’s usually because you don’t believe in yourself. You don’t need people, all you need to do is believe in what you’re doing and keep going because everything always works out. Be patient. Stay focused. You’re incredibly powerful!!!!

If you had a magic wand and could change anything about the music world, what would you change and why?

That behind the scenes there were more women in power.
